A brief History of Piazza Vecchia

In the heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo), Piazza Vecchia enchants with its Renaissance charm.
Once the civic hub, today it is the elegant “living room” of the city, surrounded by art, history, and a unique atmosphere.

The square dates back to the Middle Ages as the civil and commercial center of Bergamo Alta.
During the communal era (12th–15th centuries), it became the political heart of the city with the Palazzo della Ragione and later the Palazzo del Podestà.
In the 15th–16th centuries, under Venetian rule, the square was harmonized and beautified with the addition of the Contarini Fountain (1780).
The Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai, built in the 17th century, dominates the north side, establishing the square as a cultural landmark.
Just steps away are the Cathedral, the Colleoni Chapel, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, making the area a spiritual crossroads as well.
Today it is considered the city’s “salotto,” a symbol of balance between history, art, and urban life.
